Starting this January 29, Prime Video will change its advertising policy and will show commercials.

All subscribers (either independently or as Amazon Prime subscribers) will see ads in the content, similar to how other platforms such as Hulu, Disney+, or Netflix operate. In fact, only Apple TV+ remains ad-free. The company founded by Jeff Bezos has clarified that it will not raise the current price of the Prime subscription in 2024.

The change arrives first in the United States, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. It will then be implemented in France, Italy, Mexico, Australia, and Spain. Those in Guam, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and the Mariana Islands are lucky, as they will not have ads on their Prime Video.

To avoid ads, you will have to pay an extra $2.99 per month. This means almost $36 more per year if you don’t want commercials surrounding the platform’s content.

Content that will not have ads

It’s not all bad news. Content bought or rented on the platform will not have ads. So if you’ve paid to buy or rent a movie like ‘Barbie’ or ‘Napoleon’, there will be no commercials during its playback.

Amazon sent an email link where you can pre-register for the ad-free monthly option. You will not be billed until the ads are shown on January 29, and you can cancel this subscription at any time. The pre-registration link indicates that you may still see ads during live programming, such as Thursday Night Football, on Freevee, or if you subscribe to certain channels.
