The first game in the Fallout series, developed by Black Isle Studios and Interplay Entertainment, is an isometric perspective RPG for PC released in 1997. The game unfolds in a post-apocalyptic world following the Great War between the United States and China in 2077, which has brought the planet to the brink of annihilation.
Set in the year 2161, nearly a century after the conflict, players assume the role of the Vault Dweller, an inhabitant of Vault 13, an underground shelter designed to protect the population from radiation and dangers of the outside world. The game’s primary objective is to find a water chip, essential for the shelter’s operation. It’s at this point the protagonist must venture outside to find a replacement for the vital chip, crucial for the shelter dwellers’ survival.

The game has multiple endings, depending on the player’s choices throughout the gameplay. In the canonical ending, the player finds the water chip and brings it back to Vault 13, saving its inhabitants from death by dehydration. However, the player also discovers that the Enclave, a secretive organization formed from the remnants of the United States government, plans to use a machine called the water purifier. With this weapon, they aim to purify the water of the outside world and kill all mutants and humans infected by radiation. The player is faced with the choice of destroying the water purifier or allowing the Enclave to use it.
And how does the second game begin?
The sequel to the first game, Fallout 2, also developed by Black Isle Studios and Interplay Entertainment, was released a year later, in 1998. The game takes place 80 years after the events of the first game and follows the descendant of the character from the first game on a new adventure. The primary objective of the game is to save their tribe from starvation and the effects of the Wasteland. To do this, they must find a Garden of Eden Creation Kit (GECK), a device that can create a paradise in a desolate area.
Like the first game, Fallout 2 has multiple endings, depending on the player’s choices during the gameplay. In the canonical ending, the player finds the GECK and uses it to create a paradise for their tribe. However, the player also discovers that the Enclave still exists and is planning to use a spaceship to colonize another planet. The player is faced with the option of stopping the Enclave or allowing them to leave.
