If you’re a Prime Video subscriber, we have bad news for you. Starting January 29, the famous content platform will begin to include ads in its series, programs, and movies.
Prime Video is the latest platform to join others such as Hulu, Netflix, or Disney+, which already place ads on their content. The company says they will add “limited ads to their programs, to provide additional revenue and help keep prices low.”
The first users to see ads will be those in the United States, Canada, Germany, and the United Kingdom. They will be followed by those in France, Italy, Mexico, Australia, and Spain.
The ad-included option will be the default for those Prime Video subscribers who pay for free shipping from Amazon. If you want to enjoy an ad–free service you’ll have to pay an extra $2.99 a month, on top of the base price of $14.99. Subscribers who only pay $8.99 per month for Prime Video as a stand alone product will also have the option to pay the $2.99 fee to go ad-free. The company founded by Jeff Bezos has announced that it will not raise the current price of the Prime subscription in 2024.
What if I am seeing ads on Prime Video?
If this happens to you before January 29, you may have been included in Prime Video’s ad test. If you do not want to see ads, you can opt to pay an additional fee for the ad-free version.
Contents that will not have ads
There is a limit to the ads. Content bought or rented on the platform will not have ads. So if you’ve paid to buy or rent a movie like ‘Barbie’ or ‘Napoleon’, there will be no commercials during its playback.
Prices of each platform without ads
Here are the ad-free prices in the United States for each platform:
